This unusual piece, Common Wealth, was composed for the London Borough of Barnet's celebration of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee in 2012, to be performed by the massed forces of several of the Borough's secondary schools at a large civic ceremony held at Golders Green.
The work uses familiar melodies from around the Commonwealth, and requires many groups of instrumentalists to begin playing fragments of these melodies from all corners of the performance space. Another group is in the centre, performing a "call" motif. The scattered groups gradually approach the central group (while playing), and the music gradually converges into a single, united theme.
Flexible, requires 10 groups plus a main central group of instrumentalists. The parts provide for high or low instruments in B flat, C, E flat, etc., and can be further adapted as required.
