Gaudete (2014)

A Christmas carol based on a plainchant from Piae Cantiones, 1582, with earlier (15th century) words.

There are many settings of this plainchant (perhaps most famously by Steeleye Span!) My arrangement uses the original plainchant for the chorus ("Gaudete..."), but the harmonisation and verses are original. I have transcribed the plainchant from original but I have interpreted the rhythmic notation slightly differently to the conventional interpretation, allowing for the music to alternate between simple and compound time (2/4 and 6/8 in this case).

Gaudete

Gaudete, gaudete! Christus est natus
Ex Maria virgine, gaudete!

Tempus adest gratiæ
Hoc quod optabamus,
Carmina lætitiæ
Devote reddamus.
Gaudete...

Deus homo factus est
Natura mirante,
Mundus renovatus est
A Christo regnante.
Gaudete...

Ezechielis porta
Clausa pertransitur,
Unde lux est orta
Salus invenitur.
Gaudete...

Ergo nostra contio
Psallat iam in lustro;
Benedicat Domino:
Salus Regi nostro.
Gaudete...
