Passion Meditations
2025
Passion Meditations is an immersive audio-visual experience depicting the Passion of Christ, by Tim Benjamin. It was created to provide an alternative "Stations of the Cross" experience, and was first made available at St Mary's Church, Todmorden, where Benjamin is the organist and director of music. Following an atmospheric first presentation in surround sound at twilight on Palm Sunday 2025, the work was repeated throughout Holy Week on a large screen along with a "labyrinth" laid out in the nave of the church. Many visitors were therefore able to engage with the work through sound, visuals, and physically by walking the labyrinth. The final part, depicting the Resurrection, was revealed at the dawn service on Easter Day 2025.
Passion Meditations draws on the music of J.S. Bach's St. Matthew Passion, along with foley and field recordings from around the world, and Benjamin's original imagery and music, and is designed to provide a new way of following the story of Christ's Passion in the traditional "Stations of the Cross" (read more about this tradition in the Church of England).
The work is available in a special Passion Meditations website, along with Biblical texts and interpretations at each Station, written by Revd Catherine Shelley.
